In 2011 the Cotroceni National Museum marks the 20th anniversary of its existence in the cultural milieu of Bucharest. On this special occasion, the projects arraigned for the coming year, both national and international, are set to illustrate the history of the Cotroceni ensemble, the life and work of personalities whose names are still attached to this space, the work of famous contemporary Romanian artists, concerts and debates focusing on key issue of contemporary curatorial practices. We therefore begin this year with the opening of the exhibitionElena Cuza, Romania’s First Lady, on the 8th of March, at 6 p.m. Another two exhibitions shall be opened in March: on the 24th the exhibition Theodor Aman - painter and engraver and on the 31st of March Cromatic Universes, Iosef Iser. The exhibitions mark the 180th and 130th anniversary of the births of the two painters. We have had the priviledge of collaborating with numerous museums and libraries in Bucharest and not only for the exhibition Elena Cuza, Romania’s First Lady: The National History Museum, the Bucharest Municipality Museum, the Theodor Aman Musuem, the National Military Museum King Ferdinand I, The Romanian Academy Library, the National Museum Moldova – the Union Museum - Iaşi, The Peleş National Museum, the Galaţi History Museum, the History and Archaeology Museum in Piatra Neamţ, The Romanian Literature Museum, Iaşi, the private collection of dr. Mariana Păvăloiu. In the exhibition the public can revisit personal objects of the first lady: the golden bracelet and the seal with the H. C initials, her cloak, the copy of a dress worn by Elena Cuza after the death of Al. I. Cuza, the beauty set and knitting set, her writing set, her travelling kit, the fan bearing her initials as well as the crown made of precious stones, personal items, accessories, the portrait done by Theodor Aman in 1863 as a donation of the Elena Doamna Asylum, the portrait of Al. I. Cuza (1864) etc. Also on exhibit: Sevres porcelain table sets belonging to the Cuza family, (with the monograms A.I.C. and H.C, the coat of arms of the United Principalities and the „One in all“ motto, utensils, decorative objects, tea and coffee sets, table cloths, some bearing the initials of the prince and lady Elena Cuza. Elena Cuza was one of the main charity supporters, she founded in 1862 the Elena Doamna Asylum in Cotroceni, destined for orphan girls, illustrated by the exhibited medal Elena Doamna Asylum, 1862, made out of gilded bronze, as well as icons executed by the students of the Asylum. The exhibition shall be completed by letters, photographs, lithographs, stamps, photo albums, such as the one dedicated by Carol Popp de Szathmary to lady Elena Cuza, books etc. |
The fascinating atmosphere of the 19th century in Cotroceni shall be recreated by an interior refurbished according to documents and descriptions in the age, close to her former apartment in Cotenceni Palce. The furniture, some of which is exhibited for the first time, is part of the collection of the Cotroceni National Museum. The opening shall be followed by a concert dedicated to the International Woman’s Day, held by Patricia Seymour- soprana and Adina Cocargeanu, piano. The program features works by Jules Massenet, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán. The exhibition shall be opened to the public between March 8th and May 31st and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9.30 and 5.30, entrance fee: 5 lei.
