The reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza and its events are the focus of this exhibition. In 7 years only, his reforming politics led to the legislative and administrative union of the Principalities, to the modernization of Romanian society and opened the path for Romania’s independence and unity. The exhibition gathers together official and personal documents of Alexandru Ioan Cuza: the appointing as ruler of Moldavia and of Wallachia, signed on the 5th and on the 24th of January 1859, the oath he took at his election in Moldavia, the Ottoman confirmation that attests to this decision, the approval on behalf of the sultan, the diploma and passports of Alexandru Ioan Cuza together with his will, wrote on the 8th of January 1873. The visitors can also see currencies and letters of the age that bear the seal and the stamps of both Wallachia and Moldavia. Apart from documents, one can admire the investment sword of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, his parade sword, a gift from the Serbian prince Mihail Obrenovici, stamps, litographies and medals. The atmosphere of the 19th century in the Cotroceni palace, the residence of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, is recreated through an interior decorated in the fashion of the Cotroceni Palace of mid - 19th century. |
