| THE „BOYAR“ PALLADY VISITING THE COTROCENI NATIONAL MUSEUM | |
The Cotroceni National Museum, in collaboration with the Arts Museum in Craiova, have opened, Thursday, September 16th 2010, 6 pm in the Medieval Spaces of the museum the exhibition The „boyar“ Pallady visiting the Cotroceni National Museum. His nobility starts with his genealogy: son of Iancu Pallady ( his ancestors are traced back in the 17th century at Vasile Lupu’s court) and of Maria Cantacuzino (therefore of family alliance with Şerban Cantacuzino and Constantin Brâncoveanu). Theodor Pallady has studied engineering at the Dresden Politechnics (1887-1889), also taking up lessons in drawing and painting with Erwin Oehme, the one advising him to go to Paris in pursuit of his newly discovered talent. There, he works in Jean Arman's workshop and registers at the Belles Artes Academy. In 1882 he joins the workshop of Gustave Moreau, where he befriends Henri Matisse, Georges Rouault and Albert Marquet. After Moreau's death (1897) he works in the worshops of Aime Morot and Fernand Cormon, also attending the classes of Puvis de Chavannes, a great teacher of details in drawing and the glow of colours. In 1904 he returns home and exhibits in the official salons of the Romanian Athenaeum,. He keeps his connections to Paris, where he opens several personal exhibitions, until 1940. He also exhibits at the Venice Biennale in 1924, 1940, 1942. With intricate influences - German school rigour, Moreau's symbolism, the Art Nouveau experience, Matisse's friendshio, in short Ecole de Paris connections, Pallady slowly turned to classicism, a durable feature beneath the veil of appearances. His predilections for still nature unveils his propensity for the poetic and harmonious universalism. Art critics have emphasized his contemplative, sensitive and nostalgic spirit, noticing the success of blending Moldavian nobility with Parisian dandysm in Romanian painting. Pallady was a subtle presence during the communist years: although he encouraged the formation of the Artists Union, he never made any concessions to social realism. The Theodor Pallady collection of the Arts Museum in Craiova, now at the Cotroceni National Museum, gathers 26 paintings, dating from the first years of his creation (1904-Bridge over the Seine. Arts Bridge) up to the last years of his creative period (The House in Bucium, Landscape from the old Iasi). Two major themes of Pallady's creation are also visible: nudes in interiors and still natures. By this exhibitions, the organizers have aimed to recall the public about Pallady's work, one of the true intellectuals of Romanian arts, who used to say: “I am not modern, I come from all ages. The exhibition is opened from September 16th 2010 to March 16th 2011 and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday, from 9.30 to 5.00 pm, entrance fee 5 lei. Sponsors: Price Waterhouse Coopers. Partner: Konica Minolta. |
