We have the pleasure of welcoming you on Thursday, March 31st 2011, at 6 pm at the opening of the exhibition „Cromatic Universe - Iosif Iser“, on the 130th anniversary since the painter’s birth. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with 15 prestigious museums in Bucharest and the country: the Bucharest Municipality Museum, the National Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, the County Museum Prahova „Ion Ionescu Quintus“, the National Museum Complex „Moldova“ in Iasi - the Arts Museum, the Arts Museum Constanta, the Arts Museum Timisoara, the Arts Museum Craiova, the Arad Museum Complex, the „Vasile Pârvan“ Museum, Bârlad, the Museum of the Iron Gates Region Drobeta - Turnu Severin, the Museum Complex „Iulian Antonescu“ Bacău - the Arts Museum, the EcoMuseum Research Institute, Tulcea - the Arts Museum, the „Rudolf Schweitzer - Cumpăna“ Art Gallery, Piteşti, the National Museum of Romanian Literature, the Bucovina Region Museum. Born on May 21st 1881, Iosif Iser followed secondary school courses in Pitesti and high school in Ploiesti. In 1899 he departs for Munchen, where he studies in the Arts Academy with Anton Azbe, and then Paris. Author of numerous caricatures in newspapers such as „Adevarul“, „Furnica“ and „Belgia Orientului“, he proved extremely active, taking numerous travels in Romania and abroad, which proved a source of true inspiration. In 1936 he started, together with Camil Ressu, Gheorghe Petraşcu, Jean Al. Steriade and other painters the „Art“ movement, and in 1937 he is awarded with the first prize in the International Exhibition in Paris. He organized numerous exhibitions, both personal and group events, in Romania and abroad between 1906 and 1958 and in 1955 he became a member of the Romanian Academy of Science. He died on April 25th 1958, one month after his last exhibition in Bucharest. The „Cromatic Universe“ exhibition aims to provide the public with a retrospective of the authentic and fascinating life scenes represented by Iser. He is considered to be one of the best interpreters of human nature through painting. Numerous moods and states of mind are captured in his painting and refashioned in bright and refined colours, in both warm and cold tones. In his mature period, Iser was inspired by scenes from Dobrudjja, visible in portraits of local Tatars and, after his trip to Spain, the artist has achieved the most luminous and original works of his career. He continued to be inspired by Tatars, later on focusing on harlequins and ballerinas. Iosif Iser’s work, in coal and pencil drawings, watercolours and oil paintings focus on: portraits of Turks and Tatars, expressive portraits, peasant life, scenery, charming odalisques, ballerinas and melancholic harlequins. Among the paintings selected for the exhibition by the curators of the Cotroceni National Museum: Odalisque in green, Odalisque with necklace, Odalisque in Blue, Tatar family , Two Turks in a Cafe, Scenery from Spain, Portrait of Spanish Woman, Spanish Woman with Fan, Harlequin, Ballerina, Ballerina, Woman with a Yellow Overcoat in Armchair, Sitting Nude, Scenery from Dobrudja, Selfportrait. Iser’s universe, recreated in the exhibition, is completed with several autographs destined for friends. The exhibition is opened to the public between March 31st and May 31st 2011 and can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday between 9.30 and 5.30.
