MUSEUM PEDAGOGY

Since one of the main functions of a museum is education, the National Cotroceni museum continues to organize an extensive program in museum pedagogy. It aims at familiarizing young generations of students with the national heritage and the importance of its preservation and usage over time.

This being said, our institution has answered positively, from the beginning, to any proposals coming from different educational institutions. At the beginning addressed to universities, the museum pedagogy program was diversified in order to include both elementary and highschool students.

In the case of university students, the program functions as an internship. Thus, through lectures and courses held by out specialists, the students get acquainted to museums, discover their importance in education today, understand the input of conservation and restoration, of using the national and world heritage, and get to know the structure of a museum.

The Cotroceni National Museum participated as partner - by offering free access in the museum- in the first two editions of Studentiada, an event organized by the students of the Polytechnic School of Bucharest, which proved to be a very popular project.

As for elementary and highschool level students, a new museum pedagogy program Notice, listen, learn was launched in 2007. It entails visits to the museum and lectures for the students. They can be taught with the help of documents, photographs, bibliographies that deepen the understanding of the subject. Different cultural activities that involve students are another direction of the museum pedagogy program, in the temporary exhibitions of the Cotroceni National Museum.

The museum has organized theme contests for elementary and highschool students, linked to the anniversary of important events in national history, but also Romanian culture and civilization.

August 1st 2009 - Origami Exhibition and Workshop at the Cotroceni National Museum
The Cotroceni National Museum, in partnership with Burda Romania, organized on Saturday, August 1st, between 10 a.m and 4 p.m, in the garden of the Palace, a workshop entitled Origami - The Paper Palace, with Bogdan Ionescu, who taught children how to make paper toys.
The workshop is a first step to the Origami International Festival, to be held in the same garden of the Palace, on the 25th and 26th of September.
Origami is a traditional Japanese art of paper folding that has known different styles and techniques. It encourages pacience, the skill of maintaining a physical and spiritual balance, and helps children acknowledge the basic notions of righteousness and truth.
Bogdan Ionescu, only 11, is one of the origami enthuziasts, and his passion started in 2003 when he received as Christmas present two books about this art. Selftaught, he learned the diagrames, and has lately started to create his own. In June, Bogdan Ionescu has met His Excellency, the Japanese Embassador in Romania, Mr. Yoshinobu Higashi, who was taken in by his paper works.
Bodgan was invited to hold origami workshops for Ioana magazine and the Carturesti bookshop at the first edition of Kihi-Kiha&co Fair.
Bogdan sees his new passion as a method to relax, to create a new, imaginary world. He presents his new hobby to children, as an alternative to a world where games, imagination and skill are overcome by computers.
